There are many options of neighborhoods for where to stay in Rome, all with pros and cons.

There are unique aspects that make these neighborhoods utterly different from each other, and here are six of the best neighborhoods in Rome.

Picking your hotel for your visit to Rome can be challenging due to the various options.

No matter your price range of preference though, there is a hotel in Rome for you!

Whether you are spending 10 days in Italy, have a little more time like 2 weeks, or are renting a car and planning an Italy road trip, you are going to want to choose a good base for your time in Rome!

This post will help you break down which is best for you!

If you want to stay in a neighborhood near the center of Rome, you should stay in Centro Storico, Monti, or Testaccio.

Searching for the most affordable accommodation in Rome? Look at Testaccio, Esquilino, or Trastevere.

If you are trying to find a neighborhood that’s not filled with tourists, try Prati, Testaccio, or Trastevere.

No matter what kind of area you are looking for in Rome, you will have plenty of options for where to stay in Rome!

Public transit also connects most of these neighborhoods, making it easy to explore all the best things to do in Rome.

It can be overwhelming trying to decide where to stay in Rome, so this article is to help you narrow down the best neighborhood to stay in for you all while seeing some of the best things in Italy!

Centro Storico/Historic Center Is Where To Stay For First Timers

If you are looking for a central location in Rome, Centro Storico, also known as the Historic Center, is the best area to stay in Rome.

Located a quick walk away from some of Rome’s most famous sights, it will be hard to run out of things to do.

For example, the Pantheon and the Trevi Fountain are both only a walk away.

One thing to be aware of though, is there is not a metro stop in Centro Storico. Still, it is not a very far walk to the stops at the Colosseum or the Spanish Steps.

If you are traveling to Rome for the first time, Centro Storico would be an easy neighborhood to stay in during your trip.

Due to Centro Storico’s popularity and proximity to well-known locations, staying in this area may be more expensive than in some other neighborhoods in Rome.

It is one of the most beautiful, as well as convenient, neighborhoods to stay in though.

When deciding where to stay in Rome for the first time, you should consider Centro Storico.

This is the perfect spot if you only have 2 days in Rome.

Prati Is Where To Stay Near The Vatican

Compared to Centro Storico, Prati is a much more residential area of Rome.

If you want to truly experience the culture of Rome, then Prati is where to stay in Rome.

Filled with traditional restaurants and authentic markets, you may find yourself never wanting to leave the neighborhood!

It is also a more upscale area of Rome though, so be prepared to pay a little extra during your stay in Prati.

It is certainly possible to find some great deals in the area, so stay on the lookout!

When finding a hotel, know Prati is an area where finding rooms with windows is almost impossible due to how close together the buildings are.

If you decide to explore outside of Prati, you will find that it is located close to the Vatican.

It is also connected to public transit, making it easy to find other sights that Rome has to offer.

If you are looking for convenience, Prati is one of the best neighborhoods in Rome.

Be aware though that Prati is on the opposite side of the river from the historic center, where some of Rome’s other sights are.

All you need to do, though, is take the metro, and you can get to the Historic Center.

Monti Is the Best Area Near The Colosseum

When deciding where to stay in Rome, Monti is another excellent choice.

It is very convenient for public transit, as it is only one stop away from Termini, which is where lines A and B cross.

It is also only a short walk away from the Colosseum and the Roman Forum, two of Rome’s most popular attractions.

Because of these points, it is where to stay in Rome with family. Everything is walkable, even for younger kids.

Spend your afternoons exploring Monti’s many shops, wine bars, and restaurants.

Monti is also a pretty well-lit and safe neighborhood in Central Rome.

When finding your hotel, be aware that finding a room with a window can be, although not impossible, quite hard.

If you are looking for a quiet place to spend your time, check where the hotel is located.

Some areas of Monti, specifically Santa Maria ai Monti are filled with cafes where people hang out late into the night.

If your hotel is located here, you might want to consider asking for a room in the back of the building, or if the building is soundproof in some way.

If the nightlife is something you would enjoy, though, Monti is where to stay in Rome, and you don’t need to worry as much about the sound.

There are also plenty of quiet streets in Monti, so read reviews and ask before booking.

It’s a popular area for tourists so prices are pretty moderate here. There are also tons of hotels and Airbnbs in Rome so it is quite possible to find good deals.

Testaccio Is the Best Rome Neighborhood for Food And Shopping

You’ll find Testaccio right outside the Historic Center of Rome.

If you are looking for a very local feel where you are staying, Testaccio is where to stay in Rome.

It definitely feels more lived-in compared to most of the other neighborhoods in Rome.

Because it is located outside of some of the more popular neighborhoods in Rome, finding a room in this area will probably be one of your cheaper options.

In Testaccio, you will mostly find Airbnbs or other forms of rented apartments.

Because of that, there are many hotels in Rome that are technically in Aventino but border Testaccio.

Testaccio is also known for some of the amazing restaurants that can be found on its streets.

If you are a foodie looking for authentic Italian cuisine, this is the best part of Rome to stay in.

When booking your hotel, make sure you check reviews for any popular pubs or restaurants that might be around your hotel so you know if the street will quiet down at night.

This area is also great for shopping! There are a bunch of specialty boutiques to check out.

For the same reason that Testaccio is one of the more affordable neighborhoods, it is NOT great if you are looking for the most convenient option.

Most of Rome’s well-known attractions are not in Testaccio, and there is not a metro stop in the neighborhood.

There is a metro stop that’s not too far away from Testaccio though, and there are buses that service the area.

Even though Trastevere is on the opposite side of the river from Central Rome, it still feels very local.

It’s also not a long walk to get to the other side. It can, however, be slightly more challenging to get to other sights in Rome.

Although there are no metro stops in Trastevere; you can still use the buses and trams.

Nevertheless, to get to some of the innermost streets, you will need to walk or take a cab.

Walking through these streets will be anything but boring! There are plenty of Rome hidden gems to find.

Trastevere is almost completely made up of narrow picturesque streets with very old shops and bakeries, and hidden squares and doorways.

If you are looking for a charming neighborhood, then Trastevere is one of the best areas in Rome.
