Hands Down, This Is Where To Stay In Paris
Understanding Paris Neighborhoods
Before you can choose where to stay in Paris, you must understand the Paris Neighborhoods and how they are set up. This will help you understand our guide and where each location is in a bit more detail when we are showing you the best places to stay in Paris below.
Paris is set up into 20 Arrondissements or neighborhoods if you find that word confusing to say. The Arrondissements being with Arrondissement 1 which is located in the center of Paris near the Louvre and unfurl across the city like a wheel or a clock. The Arrondissements “unwind” across Paris so to speak.
Each Arrondissement in Paris has its own unique charm and character and this will depend on what you are looking for and what you want out of your trip. We are here to tell you that each and every one of the Arrondissements in Paris are pretty well connected by the Paris Metro so you don’t have to worry at all!
You can take a look at the map below to get an idea of how the Arrondissements in Paris are laid out. You can see that the first one begins in the center of the map and the higher numbers are on the outskirts of the city. Having a basic understanding of the Arrondissements will help you choose where to stay in Paris with ease.
The 7th Arrondissement Is Hands Down Our Favorite Place To Stay In Paris
After countless trips to Paris, the one place that we always come back to is the 7th Arrondissement. If you are looking for where to stay in Paris that is right in the heart of the city, this is the place for you. It is a little higher priced than other places to stay in Paris and the Arrondissement has a mixture of local and tourist feel. We honestly don’t see too many tourists when we stay here which is why we love it.
Our main reason for staying in the 7th Arrondissement is because it is just STEPS away from the Eiffel Tower and Champs de Mars. For us, this beats absolutely everything else. This beats the Louvre, this beats going out late at night, this beats shopping. Being steps away from the Eiffel Tower and near many metro stations is why we keep coming back here when choosing where to stay in Paris.
Upsides: Right by the dreamy Eiffel Tower! You can walk to Trocadero for sunrise! Fantastic location. Lots of local food options and bakeries and cafes. Some areas are touristy while others have a very local feel. Home to Rue Cler Market!
Downsides: More expensive than other neighborhoods due to proximity to the Eiffel Tower. Some metro stations are a further walk depending on where you stay in the neighborhood.

The 18th Arrondissement Is Where To Stay In Paris On A Budget
The 18th Arrondissement is home to Montmartre and is where to stay in Paris if you are on a budget. Well, that used to be the case at least! Gone are the days of Montmarte being the place of hostels and parties. It has really risen up since we first stayed there at a $45/night accommodation and is one of the best places to stay in Paris for charm.
When you think “Paris” you will think of Montmartre with its cobblestone streets, soaring churches, cute buildings, and cafes galore. It is very artistic and very affordable. Unlike the 7th which is home to only a few metro stations, the 18th Arrondissement feels much more connected even though it is on the outskirts of the Arrondissement circle.
When looking for where to stay in Paris, consider what you are looking for. The 18th Arrondissement is great for first time visitors to Paris as well as returning lovers of this city. We often think this is the best area to stay in Paris because it is far-flung from the hustle and bustle and gives you a very old-world feel. We hope to plan a trip to Paris again in the future so we can stay in Montmartre. That is, once we get over our need to stay in the 7th Arrondissement!
Upsides: Very affordable and quaint. Gives you a real “Paris” vibe. Close to tons of shops and restaurants. Well connected by the metro. Really becoming more popular with tons to see and do. Lots of metro stations nearby.
Downsides: A bit far from the city center [really only 15-20 min but still!]. The 18th is built on a hill so if you have trouble walking uphill may not be a good choice.

The 1st Arrondissement Is One Of The Best Places To Stay In Paris In The City Center
Staying in the 1st arrondissement was long on our list of the best places to stay in Paris and we must say, it did not disappoint. The 1st arrondissement is the true city center of Paris! It is the 1st arrondissement both in name and location and all other districts stem from this area. The 1st arrondissement is also home to the famous Louvre Museum as well as the Palais Royal and various gardens.
There is so much to see and do when you choose the 1st arrondissement when searching for where to stay in Paris. Some of our favorite things to do when staying in the 1st arrondissement are to walk around the Palais Royal during sunrise and to walk around the Louvre Pyramid at night. If you choose this as your place to stay in Paris, see if you can stay up later than the lights! Yes, the lights in Paris actually shut off, usually around 1am, and the Louvre complex will go dark. It is eery and cool!
Upsides: True city center of Paris. Very well connected by Metros and busses. Just steps away from the Seine River. Tons of restaurants and cafes nearby. Walking distance to other sites in other districts. Many shopping options.
Downsides: More expensive than other districts as it is small. Some may consider it too touristy. Smaller district means fewer options for hotels.

The 4th Arrondissement Is Where To Stay In Paris For Nightlife
Okay, please don’t let the fact that the 4th Arrondissement [Le Marais] is a great place for nightlife scare you away. We made this the heading because the 4th Arrondissement IS indeed a fantastic place for nightlife, but that isn’t all it has to offer! We don’t go out at all and we loved our time spent in the 4th Arrondissement. If you aren’t a drinker or partier like we are, please don’t let this scare you away about choosing the 4th Arrondissement when looking for where to stay in Paris.
Le Marais includes a small part of the city north of the Seine as well as a part of the Seine and the islands on which Notre Dame and Saint Chapelle are found. When we stayed in the 4th Arrondissement we were walking distance from Notre Dame and the Seine. For us, it was about a 10-minute walk. However, you can choose to stay right on the river bank or even on the same islands that Notre Dame is built on. This is one of our dream places to stay in Paris and we will get to stay on one of the islands in the future!
The 4th Arrondissement ranges from affordable to expensive, depending on what and where you want to stay in Paris. Le Marais is also filled with tons of incredible bars and restaurants. You can have everything from LGBT friendly bars and speakeasies to chic cocktail and whiskey bars. It all depends on what you are looking to get out of Le Marais!
Upsides: Lively neighboorhood with many dining and drinking options. Walking distance from classic attractions. Many hotel options. Variety of metro stops. Has a “true” Parisian feel. Many shopping options.
Downsides: Can be noisy if you pick a street with lots of bars and restaurants. Can also be expensive depending on where you choose to stay. Otherwise, not many downsides to this neighborhood!

The decor is relaxed with a creamy color palette that exudes relaxation. Exposed wood beams bring a historic and earthy vibe to the apartment.

The 8th Arrondissement Offers Eiffel Tower Views And Shopping Galore
One thing that we love about staying in the 8th Arrondissement is that so many hotels offer Eiffel Tower Views. Now, we love the 7th so we can be steps away from the Iron Lady herself, but the best Eiffel Tower view hotels come out of the 8th Arrondissement. Another reason that we recommend the 8th Arrondissement when searching for where to stay in Paris is that it is home to some of the most famous shopping areas in the world.
This is one of the best places to stay in Paris if you want to be near the Champs Elysees which is a world-famous shopping street, near the Arc de Triumph, which is a world-famous monument and have views of the Eiffel Tower out of your balcony. The 8th Arrondissement is home to some of the best hotels in Paris and you really cannot go wrong. We love staying here but it is one of the more popular places to stay in Paris, especially for luxury travelers. That being said, the range of hotels in Paris located here are both high-priced and more affordable, depending on where you look.
Upsides: Pretty much everything! Close to shopping! Close to the metro! Eiffel Tower views from many hotels. You can choose a touristy or less touristy area depending on your taste. World-class dining! Many sites all in one district.
Downsides: Hotels can be pricey depending on what you want. People who hate crowds may want to book further away from the Arc de Triumph area. More touristy than other districts.

The 16th Arrondissement Is Posh And Where We Stayed Our First Trip
We get a little nostalgic when we talk about the 16th Arrondissement. This is where we stayed in Paris on our very first trip to Paris.
After many weeks of research, this is where we ended up. It was affordable, it was walking distance from the Eiffel Tower, and it was close to a metro station and a famous bridge [where they filmed Inception!] If you are looking for where to stay in Paris that is less touristy, this is the place for you!
The 16th Arrondissement in Paris is home to very wealthy residents, but the accommodations for tourists aren’t any more expensive than anywhere else in the city! It is home to foreign embassies, famous museums such as the Palais de Tokyo and Foundation Louis Vuitton.
The hilly area is known as “Passy” is home to some of the wealthiest folks in Paris. Passy is the area that we stayed in on our first trip and it was less than a 5-minute walk away from the “Passy” metro station. We actually quite enjoyed being on the M6 line as it had us easily connected to many spots in Paris.
If you are considering the 16th Arrondissement as one of the best places to stay in Paris, take it from us, the area is gorgeous and there aren’t nearly as many tourists as in other districts. Everything has a more local albeit upscale feel and you can walk the bridges across the Seine and take in views of the Eiffel Tower from on top of the Hill Passy.
Upsides: Off-the-beaten tourist track. You can live like the local wealthy residents. Wonderful dining options. Close by the Eiffel Tower, Trocadero, and the Seine. Well-connected by the metro. Walking distance from popular sites.
Downsides: Some may feel too cut-off from touristy things. Hotels can be more expensive depending on your choice. More residential feel some may not prefer.

The 9th Arrondissement Is The Entertainment Center Of Paris
When we booked our stay in the 9th Arrondissement of Paris we didn’t know what to expect. We had booked an Airbnb right near the Eiffel Tower and our host canceled on us with 24/hours to spare. We ended up booking a wonderful hotel in the 9th Arrondissement near Pigalle Station. We barely scratched the surface on that trip as we were so tired, but on future trips, we visited the 9th Arrondissement and are convinced it is one of the best areas to stay in Paris!
The 9th Arrondissement has so much to see and do and accommodations range in price. You can stay at the southern end of the 9th and experience all the hustle and bustle or you can stay at the more northern side for a different feel. The 9th Arrondissement is home to the Paris Opera House [gorgeous building] and tons of shopping centers like the fantastic Galleries Lafayette and more [smart tip: do NOT go on a weekend if you can avoid it!] The architecture of the buildings in the 9th Arrondissement will blow you away!
If you are looking for where to stay in Paris and want to be very well connected to the city, this is the district for you. It is full of many hotels in Paris and there are tons of metro stations that keep you connected to the rest of Paris. You can even walk to other nearby districts such as up to Montmartre or down to some of the covered shopping plazas like Galerie Vivienne. The 9th Arrondissement is the best place to stay in Paris close to everything if that is the feel you are going for!
Upsides: Very well connected by the metro. Range of hotel options. Lots of shopping options. Walkable to other districts. Food and dining everywhere. Close by Opera, Galleries Lafayette and more.
Downsides: Some may find it too busy and touristy depending on the area. Otherwise, not many downsides!
