Who doesn’t want to save money for travel? When asked why someone isn’t traveling, one of the number one reasons cited is that they don’t have enough money. Did you know that saving money for travel can start right at home? In order to become a successful saver, it is essential to be on a mission to save money everywhere and all the time. Fortunately, you can begin to save money for travel right from the comfort of your own home!

5 Everyday Ways To Save Money for Travel

1. Shut off the hot water

Would you keep a pot of water boiling on the stove all day? No? Then why do you keep the hot water in your home running 24/7? Water heaters are constantly working, especially in the winter, in order to keep your water hot and ready as soon as you turn on the tap. This is a completely unnecessary expense that you can easily eliminate in order to save money for travel. Shut off the water heater until you are ready to shower and then turn it on 20-30 minutes in advance. Don’t worry about washing dishes in hot water because there is no way for you to get it hot enough to actually matter anyway. Shutting off the hot water until completely necessary will save you thousands of dollars a year in expenses and is a simple way to save money for travel.

Along the same line as our first point, ditching your clothes dryer is a huge money saver. Did you know the dryer is actually one of the top electricity consumers in your home? Kick it old school and hang dry your laundry. Hanging laundry only takes about 20 minutes longer and cuts one of your most expensive energy users.

3. Shut off the lights

We don’t want you living in the dark, but you have got to be smart. We know tons of people who turn lights on in one room and the TV on in another room while they are in the third room. Think smart and shut off everything in your home when you aren’t using it. Running to take a shower? Shut your bedroom light off! Remember the old slogan “a penny saved is a penny earned.” Would you rather spend an extra $100 year on unnecessarily lighting your kitchen or would you rather pay half a month’s rent in Thailand? Being away of your energy usage at home is a simple way to save money for travel in your everyday life.

4. Control your temperature

Did you know many places in the world don’t have heating or air conditioning? Somehow those humans make it and you can too! Many people want their homes 70*F in the summertime, yet keep them at a warm 78*F in the winter. You should keep your temperature consistent and there is no reason that 70*F is acceptable in the summer but not in the winter. As Floridians, we understand that summers can get super hot, but try to turn your thermostat a few degrees warmer and see how it suits you. In the winter, put on some layers and save on pricey heating bills. If you really want to save money for travel, keeping the house a few degrees warmer or cooler will yield big savings on your electricity bill.

5. Use your oven for storage

Unless you are cooking for tons of people, it is possible to stop using your oven and use it for storage. Some microwaves also act as convection ovens, so go check and see if yours has this option. If it does, a convection oven/microwave combo uses much less electricity than a traditional oven and will help you save money for travel. If you don’t, consider getting a freestanding toaster oven/variation. Toaster ovens can be purchased, brand new, for as little as $50. Even better? Head to your local thrift store and shop around for something even cheaper! Who says you can’t save money for travel and still eat well?
