15 Underrated Countries In Europe You Need to See Before Everyone Else Does

There is nothing like discovering one of the underrated countries in Europe. It’s one of my favorite things, when you find a real hidden gem. 

Some of the lesser-known countries in Europe I love are Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and  

While places like Paris, Rome, and Barcelona often steal the limelight, this continent is peppered with underrated gems that offer equally incredible experiences without the overwhelming crowds. 

If you’re looking to explore something off the beaten path, here are some of the best hidden gem European countries. So start planning and booking your vacation now before everyone knows about them.

Slovenia

Slovenia often gets overshadowed by its more famous neighbors like Italy and Austria, but it offers stunning landscapes, charming towns, and a blend of Mediterranean and Alpine beauty. 

Explore Lake Bled, the vibrant capital Ljubljana, and the incredible caves of Postojna and Škocjan, all without the overwhelming crowds. Slovenia’s compact size also makes it easy to explore multiple attractions in a short period, allowing you to experience its diverse scenery and rich cultural heritage.

It’s one of the hidden vacation spots in Europe I’m sure you will fall in live with . 

This is one of the best places to spend Autumn in Europe.

Albania

Albania remains a lesser-known destination in Europe even though it boasts a beautiful coastline along the Adriatic and Ionian Seas. This underrated gem in the Balkans has a rich history, and a warm Mediterranean climate. 

The UNESCO-listed town of Gjirokastër, the beautiful beaches of the Albanian Riviera, and the stunning landscapes of Valbona Valley National Park are just a few highlights. It’s also quite a relaxed country and I have also found it very welcoming. 

With a gorgeous Adriatic coastline, ancient ruins, and the vibrant capital Tirana, it’s one of the lesser-known countries in Europe that should be high on your list.

Montenegro

Montenegro, with its dramatic mountains and stunning Adriatic coastline, offers unspoiled natural beauty comparable to more crowded locations in Europe.

Think dramatic mountains, medieval villages, and a stunning Adriatic coastline. It is a paradise for nature lovers and adventurers. 

The picturesque Bay of Kotor, the historic town of Budva, and the expansive Durmitor National Park are must visits. 

Montenegro’s landscapes rivals those of more popular destinations but remains blissfully uncrowded. One of the underrated countries in Europe that really is beautiful.

Latvia

Latvia is often bypassed by tourists heading to its Baltic neighbors, but it provides a unique blend of medieval architecture, dense forests, and stunning beaches along the Baltic Sea. 

Its capital, Riga, boasts a superb collection of Art Nouveau architecture and a vibrant cultural scene. Beyond Riga, the scenic Gauja National Park, the tranquil town of Cēsis, and the pristine beaches of the Baltic Sea await.

Latvia’s mix of urban spaces and natural beauty provides an off-the-beaten-path European experience with a fraction of the crowd.

Bosnia and Herzegovina

Often overshadowed by more prominent Balkan destinations, Bosnia and Herzegovina offers breathtaking landscapes, vibrant culture, and historic sites, all without the heavy tourist traffic. 

Sarajevo is rich in history and cultural diversity, while the city of Mostar with its iconic Stari Most bridge is stunning. 

The country’s rugged mountains, picturesque rivers, and historic towns create a landscape filled with both natural beauty and poignant history, making a must-visit location in Europe.

North Macedonia

Though gaining some popularity, North Macedonia still flies under the radar for most travelers. It offers beautiful lakes, remarkable mountains, and a rich historical tapestry. 

The stunning Lake Ohrid, one of Europe’s oldest and deepest lakes, is a UNESCO World Heritage site, nestled by charming towns and historical monasteries. Skopje, the capital, offers an intriguing blend of old and new with its historic fortress, vibrant markets, and modern sculptures. 

This lesser-known Balkan gem offers stunning locations and landscapes stepped with history and incredible architecture.

Georgia

While not a traditional European destination, Georgia is a rising star for its landscapes, historic towns, and incredible hospitality. 

The magnificent Caucasus Mountains and historic towns like Tbilisi make this country well worth a visit.  Vineyards, ancient churches, and unique cuisine make Georgia a really appealing destination.

I’ve also heard that the hospitality here is second to none and that the locals make you feel so welcome which is always a bonus.

Serbia

Serbia’s rich history, dynamic cities, and beautiful nature remain underexplored by most tourists, making it a hidden gem for those who venture there. 

Belgrade, the capital, offers an energetic nightlife and intriguing history, while the scenic town of Novi Sad hosts the famous EXIT music festival. 

The natural beauty of Tara National Park and the tranquil banks of the Danube River provide ample opportunities for relaxation and exploration in a country where tradition blends with modern vibrancy.

This is one of the best hidden gem European countries.

Andorra

Andorra, nestled in the Pyrenees between France and Spain, is often overlooked due to its small size. However, it offers superb skiing, hiking, and a tranquil escape from bustling cities. 

Andorra is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. Known for its ski resorts and duty-free shopping, this tiny principality also boasts beautiful hiking and biking trails, Romanesque churches, and the charming capital, Andorra la Vella. 

Despite its small size, Andorra’s natural beauty and welcoming atmosphere make it a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of larger tourist destinations.

Republic of San Marino

Enclaved within Italy, the Republic of San Marino may be small, but it is rich in history and offers breathtaking views, medieval architecture, and charming narrow street. 

San Marino is one of the world’s smallest countries, perched on Mount Titano, it has a rich history dating back to AD 301

When here make sure you visit the Three Towers, and explore its museums to gain insight into one of Europe’s oldest republics. 

San Marino provides a quaint, historical experience removed from the crowded tourist paths. It really is unique.

Romania

Often overshadowed by its more famous neighbors, Romania is a treasure trove of medieval castles, stunning Carpathian landscapes, and bustling cities like Bucharest. 

Its rich folklore and traditions add to the mystique, providing an authentic experience far removed from the crowded tourist paths. 

Sibiu, one of Europe’s best-preserved medieval cities, and Brasov, a 12th century Saxon town with a Black Church are must sees here. And of coarse there is Bran Castle, also known as Dracula’s Castle, and Corvin Castle, one of the largest castles in Europe. 

The Carpathian Mountains provide great hiking and skinning and Apuseni Natural Park, has limestone rock formations, caves, and prehistoric fossils. 

It is one of the hidden vacation spots in Europe I always recommend to people.

Slovakia

Slovakia tends to be overlooked in favor of its bigger neighbors like Austria and Czech Republic. However, it’s a haven for nature lovers with its beautiful High Tatras mountains, numerous national parks, and charming medieval towns like Bratislava. 

The Slovak Paradise National Park offers 300 kilometers of hiking trails. Devin Castle and Budatin Castle are also worth a visit and Slovakia is also home to Central Europe’s largest karst region.

Slovakia is a perfect blend of adventure and culture.

Malta

While Malta may be small, it is packed with history, stunning architecture, and crystal-clear waters. Often overshadowed by larger Mediterranean destinations, this island nation offers a unique experience. It is a blend of cultures and influences, ideal for both relaxation and exploration. 

Mdina is a wonderful medieval city and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Valletta the capital is also a wonderful place to visit. 

The Hagar Qim Temples are also a must see they are  megalithic temples date back to 3600-3200 BC. My absolutely favorite thing here though is the Popeye Village. It is the actual set of the  set of the 1980s film Popeye which you can visit. 

There are also some wonderful beaches here and its one of the fast countries in the world.

Moldova

Moldova is a lesser-known gem in Europe, often skipped by mainstream tourists. It offers beautiful rural landscapes, impressive wineries, and significant historical sites.

 Chisinau, the capital, offers a blend of Soviet-era architecture and modern amenities, making it quite a refreshing experience.

Moldova is known for its historic monasteries for which there are many. The landscapes is beautiful the history palpable and it is known for some great wines and wineries.

Estonia 

Estonia often flies under the radar. However its charming old towns, lush landscapes, and modern cities make it a must-visit destination. 

Tallinn, with its well-preserved medieval architecture and vibrant tech scene, offers a unique blend of the past and present.

 Beyond the capital, you’ll find pristine national parks, serene islands, and the enchanting Lahemaa National Park. The Soomaa National Park is also wonderful particularly if you like bird watching. 

Estonia’s small size makes it easy to explore. Its a country that remains relatively undiscovered, allowing you to experience its beauty without the crowds. It is one of the underrated countries in Europe.

This is one of the Prettiest Christmas Villages and Towns in Europe.

As you can see when it comes to underrated countries in Europe there are so many. Here I have included some of my favorites but there are many more. 

I do hope you visited one of them as they are all so beautiful and offer something unique and different.  

What I would say through is check travel advice for each country before you travel. Advice can change often for some of these countries.
