Planning a trip to Paris is an exciting endeavor! But what about mistakes to avoid in Paris? It’s easy to fall into common tourist traps that can detract from the authentic Parisian experience. While we have an itinerary for Paris, we also wanted to help you navigate the City of Light like a seasoned traveler. So, here are 14 essential Paris travel tips—covering everything from scams and sightseeing to dining and local etiquette.

Planning a Trip to Paris: 15 Mistakes to Avoid

Mistake #1: Not Booking Tickets to Major Attractions in Advance

We all know Paris is home to some of the world’s most iconic attractions: Eiffel Tower, the Lourve, the Palace of Versailles! Failing to book tickets in advance can cause you to wait in long lines to purchase them, thus waisting time.

Some attractions offer skip-the-line options or timed entry events. This allows you to save hours of waiting. Additionally, purchasing tickets in advance allows you to check schedules ahead of time. Some sites may be closed on certain days! This is vital to know if it’s a first time trip to Paris: don’t show up at the Louve hours late or early, or even on days its closed!

Mistake #2: Ignoring Common Scams and Pickpockets

Like any major city or any tourist destinations, Paris has its share of scams and pic pockets. Keep an eye out for common scams. Things like the “friendship bracelet trick” includes an individual tying a bracelet around your wrist and demanding payment. Other scams include fake charity collectors that stand by popular cites. These are definitely things to avoid in Paris if possible!

To protect yourself, avoid engaging with street vendors. Don’t accept unsolicited gifts. And then, to avoid pic pockets, keep your belongings secure with zippered pockets. Use front facing bags or even layer your belongings with the most expensive things on the bottom! Don’t make these tourist mistakes in Paris.

Mistake #3: Dining Near Major Tourist Attractions

We get it. The food is close by and easy to get to! But some of the top mistakes to avoid in Paris includes eating at restaurants located near popular tourist spots. They literally cater to tourists! Thus, the food is overpriced and subpar.

Instead, venture into neighborhoods like the 10th or 11th arrondissement. They will feature local bistros and cafes. Truly authentic! Visiting Canal Saint-Martin is another chance to eat at trendy eateries outside of tourist areas. Paris tips for travelers: enjoy the real food!

Mistake #4: Wearing Inappropraite Footwear

I always say Paris is best explored on foot. Many of its attractions are within walking distance of each other, so wearing sturdy shoes is essential. By the end of each day, you’ll have been waiting several miles.

Of all the mistakes to avoid in Paris, you want to make sure you’re comfortable. What not to do in Paris? Get blisters! Avoid wearing new or uncomfortable shoes. You, and your feet, will thank us! In fact, reference our what to wear guides as needed!

Mistake #5: Not Understanding the City’s Layout

Paris is divided into 20 arrondissements (aka districts). Each district has its own unique character, and knowing the layout of these can help with your itinerary and exploration!

For example, the first arrondissement is home to major attractions like the Lourve and Notre-Dame. The 18th, on the other hand, is Montmartre, a neighborhood known for its artistic vibes. Using maps or navigation tools/apps can help you explore: because of all things not to do in Paris, don’t get lost or miss out on the cool things just because you don’t know where they are!

Mistake #6: Overpacking Your Itinerary

We get it: you’re in Paris! You want to see as much as possible! It’s tempting, for sure, but overpacking your schedule can lead to burnout. And if it’s one thing you don’t want in Paris, it’s missed opportunities.

When planning a trip to Paris we recommend leaving some chance for spontaneous exploration. Instead of rushing from one location or one attraction to the next, allow yourself to take leisurely walks. People watch at cafes. Or explore hidden gems like the Musee de I’Orangeire. We promise it’s worth it!

Mistake #7: Staying in the Wrong Neighborhood

Choosing a location to stay can be overwhelming and scary since it can impact your overall experience. There are always places to avoid in Paris, but there are also places you must see! Areas like Champs-Elysees are centrally located, but can be expensive and even crowded.

Consider staying in places like Saint-Germain-des-Pres, the Latin Quarter, or Le Marais, which offer a more authentic Parisian atmosphere. They are also within easy reach of major attractions!

Mistake #8: Taking Taxis Instead of Using Public Transportation

While we mentioned walking is a big part of Paris, I think it’s important to note that Paris has an extensive and efficient public transportation system. And of all things not to do in Paris, make sure you do not miss the ease of travel. There are so many options: Metro, buses, and RER trains.

Using public transportation is not only more affordable, but allows you to experience the city like a local. Taxis and even ride-sharing services are more expensive, but they aren’t always convenient too, especially during peak hours.

Mistake #9: Not Learning Basic French Phases (Or Even Attempting To)

While many Parisians speak English, making an effort to speak French can go a long way. You’ll build rapport and show respect for the local culture. If you’re doing a first time trip to Paris, download and app and learn simple phrases!

Phrases like “Bonjour” (hello), “Merci” (thank you) and “parlez-vous anglais” (do you speak English) can enhance your interactions. It’ll make your experience more enjoyable and enhance your communication skills!

Mistake #10: Only Visiting the Major Tourist Attractions

While we understand that the Eiffel Tower and Lourve are must-sees, Paris offers many lesser-known attractions that provide a more intimate experience. So consider this your Paris vacation guide:

Consider visiting the Musee Rodin, or the Pere Lachaise Cemetery. Exploring neighborhoods like Le Marais or the Latin Quarter can allow you to see charming cafes, boutiques, and even some historical sites!

Mistake #11: Relying on Credit Cards

Credit cards are widely accepted in Paris, don’t get this wrong. However, cary some cash! This is great when visiting smaller establishments, markets or even cafes.

ATMs are readily available around the city, which makes this easier. However, be careful of potential skimming devices. Use ATMs inside bank branches for an extra layer of security. And if you’re carrying a lot of cash, store it in different places: bags, pockets, lanyards, etc. to help combat pic pockets.

Mistake #12: Overindulging in Tourist Souvenirs and Gifts

I know when I went to Paris I wanted to purchase something everywhere I went. It’s beyond tempting to buy souvenirs from street vendors from all major attractions. Again, these are overpriced. And are probably not of high quality!

Visit markets instead! Places like Marche d’Aligre or Marche des Enfants Rouges for authentic souvenirs for authentic gifts from reasonable prices. You can get a variety of products here too, from fresh produce to handmade crafts.

Mistake #13: Expecting Quick Service

Dining is expected to be savored, not rushed. Knowing this can help, once again, build culture and help establish respect. Meals, especially lunch and dinner, can take up an hour to enjoy.

And waitstaff may not check in often, or bring the check until you ask for it! Don’t feel pressured to leave quickly. Enjoy the leisurely pace of things and embrace this dining culture!

Mistake #14: Don’t Be Afraid to Take a Day Trip Outside of Parks

Once you figure out the public transport, it is the easiest thing to navigate! Don’t be afraid to venture outside of the city. Some of the best attractions around France are located outside the city center.

These are also easily accessible and offer a taste of local life. You can take full day trips to offer a whole other world see castles, beaches, vineyards, and even Disneyland Paris!
