When (and where) to find peak fall color

Timing makes all the difference when you’re chasing autumn leaves. In the Northeast, think Vermont, Maine, New Hampshire, you’ll want to aim for late September through mid-October. The Midwest usually peaks in early to mid-October. Southern and western areas like the Blue Ridge Parkway, Colorado, and the Pacific Northwest often hit their stride a little later, from mid to late October. Always check a regional foliage tracker before booking. Things can shift slightly from year to year depending on the weather.

The Best Fall Foliage Weekend Getaways In The USA

Stowe, Vermont

If you’ve ever imagined the perfect autumn village, Stowe is probably what you pictured. Nestled in Vermont’s Green Mountains, this small town is a fall classic. With fiery trees lining winding roads, farm stands selling hot cider and maple treats, and postcard-worthy views in every direction.

Route 100 is one of the prettiest drives you’ll ever take. The gondola ride up Mount Mansfield offers sweeping vistas of color that stretch for miles.

Bar Harbor, Maine

This charming coastal town sits on the edge of Acadia National Park. This park is one of the most breathtaking places to experience fall in the U.S. What makes Bar Harbor so special is the contrast, bright autumn trees set against the deep blue of the ocean.

Whether you’re hiking up Cadillac Mountain for sunrise, biking the carriage roads, or just strolling through town with a lobster roll in hand, there is always something to see.

Salem, Massachusetts

Fall in Salem is a full sensory experience. Yes, it’s famously haunted, and October is peak witchy season, but it’s also genuinely beautiful. The historic streets are lined with vibrant trees, colonial homes, and cafes brimming with seasonal treats.

Visit during the Haunted Happenings festival for the full experience. Or come just before the crowds and soak up the autumn atmosphere with a quieter walk through the old cemeteries and leafy lanes.

Lincoln, New Hampshire

The White Mountains put on a spectacular show in October, and Lincoln is the perfect base for exploring them. The nearby Kancamagus Highway is one of the most scenic drives in the country, especially when the leaves are at their peak.

Waterfalls, covered bridges, and mountain hikes make this a dream destination for nature lovers. After a day outdoors, you’ll want to curl up in a lodge with a view of the hills glowing red and gold.

I still remember driving the Kancamagus Highway for the first time, it felt like I had stepped into a painting. The leaves were so vibrant they didn’t even seem real, and every bend in the road revealed another jaw-dropping view. It’s one of those fall foliage trips USA travelers dream about for good reason.

You could even plan a longer journey using this New England fall road trip itinerary as a guide.

Hartford, Connecticut

Hartford might not be the first town that comes to mind when you think of fall getaways, but that’s part of its charm. You’ll find beautiful parks like Elizabeth Park and Bushnell Park framed by golden trees, historic homes, and fewer tourists than some of its flashier neighbors.

The city also has great museums and literary landmarks like the Mark Twain House, giving you a good balance of culture and color.

Add Hartford to your Connecticut fall foliage road trip for a perfect blend of color and culture.

Woodstock, Vermont

Woodstock is the kind of place where every turn feels like a scene from a Hallmark movie. You’ll find antique shops, farmers markets, and inns that practically demand you sit by the fire with a book.

The foliage here is rich and vivid, especially if you take a walk up Mount Tom for a view over the valley. This is New England fall at its most nostalgic.

Lake Placid, New York

Known for its winter Olympic history, Lake Placid is equally impressive in the fall. The Adirondacks turn into a canvas of reds, oranges, and yellows that reflect beautifully off Mirror Lake.

You can drive up Whiteface Mountain for jaw-dropping views, hike the nearby trails, or just relax in a lakeside lodge. There’s something about the combination of crisp air and mountain stillness that makes this spot feel extra restorative.

Door County, Wisconsin

On the other side of the country, Door County delivers serious fall charm with a Midwest twist. Located on a peninsula between Lake Michigan and Green Bay, this region is filled with apple orchards, cozy cafés, and quiet shoreline drives.

The towns are small and welcoming, the trees explode in color, and the pace of life slows just enough to let you enjoy every minute.

Asheville, North Carolina

Asheville is a dream for fall travelers, especially those who love a mix of nature and creativity. The Blue Ridge Parkway weaves right through the area and offers some of the best views of the season.

Beyond the scenery, you’ll find farmers markets, local art, and the grandeur of the Biltmore Estate all decked out for autumn. It’s the kind of place where leaf peeping pairs perfectly with a craft beer and mountain view.

Gatlinburg, Tennessee

Gatlinburg is your gateway to the Smoky Mountains, and it’s hard to beat the spectacle of those misty hills wrapped in fall color. October is especially stunning, and the area is packed with hiking trails, scenic overlooks, and little mountain shops selling everything from moonshine to handmade quilts.

It can get busy, but there’s a reason so many people return year after year, it’s simply unforgettable.

Leavenworth, Washington

In the Pacific Northwest, Leavenworth offers a totally different kind of fall escape. This Bavarian-inspired town goes all-in on autumn with Oktoberfest celebrations and golden aspen trees glowing against the Cascades.

It’s festive without feeling chaotic, and the surrounding trails make it easy to step into the quiet side of fall when you’re ready to leave the beer garden behind.

Park City, Utah

Fall in Park City means blue skies, golden aspens, and crisp mountain air. With most of the summer tourists gone and ski season not yet begun, you’ll have the town largely to yourself.

Scenic drives like Guardsman Pass are stunning this time of year, and there are plenty of hiking trails if you want to stretch your legs. Downtown, you’ll find boutiques, art galleries, and more than one good excuse to linger over a hot drink.

Telluride, Colorado

Telluride’s mountain setting makes for one of the most dramatic fall displays in the West. Bright yellow aspens adorn the hillsides, and the air has that perfect just-before-snow crispness.

The free gondola between Telluride and Mountain Village gives you unbeatable views, and the town itself is full of charm. It’s quiet, beautiful, and easy to fall in love with especially in October.

Traverse City, Michigan

In northern Michigan, Traverse City combines fall color with wine country vibes. The lakeshore provides a peaceful backdrop for autumn adventures, and the nearby Leelanau Peninsula is packed with wineries and scenic stops.

One of the most unforgettable drives in the region is the Tunnel of Trees, a winding route under a canopy of orange and gold that feels like stepping into another world.

I spent an amazing peaceful weekend in Traverse City. Sipping hot cider while watching the lake shimmer under a canopy of color, it was just perfect.
